Indoor / Outdoor Farm
Vedang Agro successfully designed and implemented a climate-controlled indoor hydroponic farm in Khandala, creating a reliable cultivation environment capable of producing premium-quality leafy vegetables and herbs throughout the year. The project was specifically engineered to overcome the challenges posed by the region’s fluctuating hill-station climate while ensuring consistent crop growth under controlled conditions.
The client’s objective was to establish a modern farming system that could deliver fresh, pesticide-residue-managed produce for premium markets without being affected by seasonal weather variations. By integrating advanced indoor hydroponic technology for leafy and herbs and polyhouse based grow bags for vine crops with simple, low cost air circulation systems for precise temperature and humidity management, Vedang Agro developed a sustainable and efficient solution that enables predictable production, superior crop quality, and year-round operational reliability.
Project Overview
Vedang Agro designed and implemented an integrated indoor and outdoor farming solution in Khandala, enabling the year-round cultivation of premium leafy vegetables, herbs, and a range of fruiting vegetables. The project was developed after assessing the site’s hilly terrain, local climatic conditions, available spaces, and specific environmental challenges, allowing each farming system to be selected according to its application and location.
By integrating advanced hydroponic technology with engineered environmental control systems, the facility was designed to deliver consistent crop quality, efficient resource utilization, and predictable production cycles. The result is a modern, sustainable farming solution capable of producing fresh, high-quality, pesticide-residue-managed produce throughout the year while maximizing operational efficiency and long-term reliability.
Indoor Hydroponic Farm
For the indoor facility, Vedang Agro selected the basement of the bungalow as the growing area, providing a naturally more stable environment compared to conventional rooms exposed to fluctuating outdoor temperatures. The basement layout was assessed to optimize the placement of the hydroponic system while maintaining adequate working space, accessibility, and ventilation.
The indoor farm was designed as a semi-automated hydroponic system, with irrigation pumps and grow lights operated through programmable timers and scheduled according to crop requirements and prevailing climatic conditions. Nutrient preparation and delivery were managed manually, while comprehensive training was provided to the client’s in-house staff, enabling them to independently operate and maintain the farm.
Rather than relying on energy-intensive air-conditioning for environmental control, Vedang Agro adopted a low-energy ventilation strategy using strategically positioned exhaust fans and standard circulation fans to improve air movement, heat dissipation, and ventilation within the growing room. This helped create a practical and economical controlled growing environment while keeping operational energy requirements under control.
Outdoor Polyhouse & Grow-Bag Farm
Complementing the indoor hydroponic facility, Vedang Agro also designed and implemented a specialized outdoor polyhouse-based vegetable cultivation system. The system used grow bags with soilless growing media to cultivate fruiting and vine crops such as tomatoes, brinjal, cucumbers, and other vegetables.
The polyhouse structure was specifically engineered for the Khandala hill-station terrain and weather conditions, with particular attention to heavy rainfall, strong winds, and protection from local wildlife. A robust structural framework was selected to withstand demanding weather conditions, while metallic mesh on the sides and polycarbonate roofing provided additional durability and improved protection against monkeys and other external disturbances.
Large-capacity exhaust fans were incorporated into the polyhouse design to improve air circulation and reduce heat and humidity accumulation inside the growing area. This combination of protected cultivation, grow-bag-based production, ventilation, and site-specific structural design created a more reliable environment for growing vegetables under Khandala’s challenging conditions.
Outcome
By combining indoor hydroponics with protected outdoor cultivation, the project provided the client with a diversified and practical farming model suited to the site’s unique conditions. The integration of semi-automated irrigation and lighting, efficient ventilation, soilless grow-bag cultivation, robust polyhouse infrastructure, and trained in-house personnel helped establish a cost-conscious, resource-efficient, and manageable farming operation.
Vedang Agro’s extended horticultural support through online assistance and periodic site visits after handover further enabled the client to address operational challenges, maintain crop performance, and progressively improve farm productivity. The project demonstrates Vedang Agro’s approach of designing the farming system around the site—not forcing a standard system onto the site—to achieve reliable production, efficient resource utilization, and long-term operational sustainability.

Project Outcome
Delivering Measurable Results
At the Khandala project, Vedang Agro began with a detailed assessment of the available site, room configuration, climatic conditions, terrain, and operational requirements. Based on this assessment, we developed an integrated indoor and outdoor farming solution, selecting the appropriate technology for each growing environment. The basement of the bungalow was selected for the indoor hydroponic farm, while the outdoor area was developed as a protected polyhouse with a grow-bag-based cultivation system for fruiting and vine crops such as tomatoes, brinjal, and cucumbers.
The indoor farm was implemented as a semi-automated hydroponic system, using programmable timers to precisely control irrigation pumps and grow lights according to crop requirements and prevailing climatic conditions. Instead of relying on power-intensive air-conditioning, the naturally more stable basement environment was supported through strategically positioned circulation fans and exhaust fans to improve air movement, ventilation, and heat dissipation.
For outdoor cultivation, Vedang Agro provided technical assistance to clients inhouse technical team in the design of Sturdy polyhouse suited to Khandala’s hilly terrain and challenging weather conditions. The structure incorporated protective metallic mesh along the sides and polycarbonate roofing to provide greater durability and protection from monkeys and other external factors. A grow-bag-based soilless cultivation system was installed inside the polyhouse, providing controlled root-zone conditions while allowing the client to cultivate a wider range of commercial vegetables. Large exhaust fans were incorporated to improve air circulation and manage heat and humidity within the growing area.
The result was a site-specific integrated farming solution combining indoor hydroponics and protected grow-bag cultivation, designed around Khandala’s unique climate, terrain, available infrastructure, and crop requirements. By combining appropriate technology with practical environmental management, Vedang Agro delivered a cost-conscious, energy-efficient, and scalable farming model that maximized the use of available space while providing the client with greater control over year-round vegetable and herb production.
